State treasuries hold the money. There are laws that turn unclaimed property over to the states. So the banks and others don't get rich off unclaimed assets - instead it's free money for the states until claimed.

If you Google, you can clearly figure out sites that legitimately belong to state governments.

Can she sign in front of a notary? Maybe you need to show your power of attorney for her finances.

You may need your dad's will/death certificate, etc.

I tried to claim money in my father's and brother's name, but the states wanted probate documents that I was the name executor. I stopped there. It wasn't worth the small amount of money to go through the hassle, since my dad was the executor for my brother and my dad didn't have any assets that went through probate.

My dad has some money in Maryland but he died in 2015 and my mom has dementia so I’m not sure how to go about trying to claim it.

Depends on what state you are in.

But I've gotten it from IL, about 20 years after the employer owed me money, and it was easy to claim and they paid me right away.

But be wary of using commercial sites - they sometimes take a percentage or fee. The state-run sites are free.

I found $16,000 and it helped me pay for school.

It took you more effort to make this post then to request the money.

My credit report has addresses going back to my first rented apartment in 1991 (left it in 1998).

Do you have old tax returns? Expired driver's licenses? I haven't purged those.
