Yeah yeah, I know you're right, but don't want to reach out about it this early. Would love to hear from others though to help satisfy my curiosity sooner...

If you are on the track that is Alg 1 in 7th and you wind up in honors pre-calc in 10th, and you can handle it well, there are excellent AP options jr and sr year. The optionality in the system is great for some kids.

Another thing to note, and ask specifically of MS admin, is combining grades. Principals will combine and advanced math class with the grade level math class of the next grade to stretch their teacher allocations as far as possible. You know your kid and know whether that would be a good fit for them or not. For my advanced math child, they would not want to be in a class with unmotivated kids that dont love math, regardless of their grade. They deal enough with those behaviors in every other subject and they look forward to math being a break from that.


The state is not creating a 3-year integrated math sequence, as other states have done. It will be integrated algebra 1&2, and it will leave out many standards from the traditional 3-year sequence of algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2

Does moving up happen often, do you know, and when do they do it? Is there a way to do it without missing content and if so how? Or do they have to self-study/have to be strong enough that missing content doesn't hold them back?


DP. This happened to someone we knew. Kid was moved up to 7+ after having done math 6. Apparently improved a lot on the spring MAP-M in 6th grade. However, the school didn’t communicate this to the family ahead of time, so the kid definitely struggled a bit with 7+, especially at the start of the year. Much better to let the family know early so the kid could cover missed content through Khan Academy.
