I would go to Loudoun and look for something nice in Lansdowne or Belmont Country Club. The latter actually has a lot of homes with first floor primary bedrooms. Then take the Greenway/toll rd to get to Tysons when needed. I live in Ashburn and get to Tysons in about 25 minutes using tolls.

Consider other factors, like distance to your medical providers, proximity to IAD if you travel to/from that airport, access to parks and libraries, and other things which may either be important to you now or will in the future when you're retired. Some locations are much more pleasant and convenient in retirement than others which may be appealing when you have a different lifestyle and commute.

I think it's fine.
It can be hard to find waterfront in Reston that is suitable for aging in place, though - mostly tall narrow houses. I'd give up the water to get a long low rancher.

Alexandria to Tysons is not a fun commute, especially when Reston is right there.


Anywhere to Tyson's is horrible during the holiday season. My coworker used to stay in a hotel to avoid getting in and out of Tyson's.

We're empty-nesters in Great Falls who know our neighbors, live in a house suitable for aging in place (elevator, room for future live-in help if needed, room for a future ramp in garage, etc) and who appreciate the relative tranquility of an area without very close-by commercial business activity. It's a very short drive to Tyson's, McLean, Vienna, Falls Church, Reston, and even to Sterling or Herndon. Different strokes....

Will be difficult but I'd get a house on the water in 22308 / 22309 and get a boat / join the yact clubs. Either that or Old Town.
