We love the convenient location -- walk to Metro, bike or walk to Capital Crescent Trail, walk to Bethesda. If I were in OP's position, I'd either stay in Arlington and look for a house with a great location and good bones and renovate to my taste or look in Palisades DC. The empty nesters we know who live in McLean, Great Falls and Vienna gripe about having to drive everywhere and not knowing any of their neighbors.
We're empty-nesters in Great Falls who know our neighbors, live in a house suitable for aging in place (elevator, room for future live-in help if needed, room for a future ramp in garage, etc) and who appreciate the relative tranquility of an area without very close-by commercial business activity. It's a very short drive to Tyson's, McLean, Vienna, Falls Church, Reston, and even to Sterling or Herndon. Different strokes....
