You absolutely call the school. They can do this, and they will do this. It's annoying for them, but they also do not want to mess up your child's chances. Then, you submit the app on time. If the transcript is late (which it likely won't even be), they'll wait a bit longer for the school. Do not throw your hands up on this one. I doubt the school will even fight you on it. They'll just say yes and emphasize that for any RD apps, she needs to not miss the deadline.

Obviously, some students may still be deciding schools they're applying to EA. So schools are able to do this. They're just trying to clear off as much as they can early.

Our school has not made such a request yet but I would be livid. It’s not even 10/1 yet. I would appeal to the principal if needed. This is not acceptable.

I agree with this. Not every kid even knows for sure what schools they are applying for EA yet. This seems too restrictive by the college counselor and I would push back.

You should call the college office at the high school and see what they say. If they stick to the deadline, you need to go in and make a stink. EA is critical for a lot of schools. Last year my DD didn’t get into a safety because she did RD instead of EA (I have a child a year behind so I can see the scattergram and she’s a yellow dot in a sea of greens). Also, her SAT arrived late to Penn state and they moved her to RD round. She got it, but my point is not all schools have a grace period PP mentioned.

I’m not one to get involved with things at school and I never ask for anything special, but on this one I’d push. It’s a reasonable request with this much time. You’re not asking the day before the EA deadline.

PP above--also at our school, it is a specific transcript person that does this. Not the assigned counselor (and she only accepts transcript requests 4 mornings a week).

If this is FCPS, I know our high school has seemingly very early deadlines for transcript request, and I don't think they advertise this nearly enough. I am very Type A about this sort of thing, and this is not my first kid so I knew to search out the deadline, which was Sept 24 for Nov 1 EA deadlines. My daughter took her list in on Sept 15 and she had added one school with an Oct 15 deadline, which had a Sept 10 deadline for the school. She apologized to the person and in our minds, we were resigned that it may not get there " on time". All the other schools on the list were in "early" . Yesterday she started getting emails from some schools that they had received her transcripts. So they all went out in a very timely fashion. Now, this may have also been because she got them in before the Sept 24 rush, who knows. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Pressure? I would have suggested to be extra nice and apologetic.

I will absolutely try, but I understand that school counselors are super busy and my daughter isn't the only one who needs transcripts. She has been very standoffish with me about the entire application process and wanting to do everything alone and that I needed to let her do it alone and now this has happened. I'm also upset with myself about not standing my ground. I do remember asking her about the deadlines and I was told that she had it 'under control'.

Sending the transcripts is a few clicks. You are not asking for the moon. Don’t be hard on her. It really might help if you call guidance and advocate. (Yes, ppl will say your daughter should, but the counselor is less likely to ignore you).

I really appreciate everyone's input. This is our first time doing the college application process (my husband and I do not have degrees) and it has been a steep learning curve for all involved.

This sounds like an internal deadline at your school, but not insurmountable. I'd counsel my student to set up a meeting to express regret, apologize, and ask respectfully if there's any leeway. How hard can it be for a school to release one more transcript that was requested just a few days late?

The transcript itself just takes a few clicks for the counselor to submit. What takes more time is the counselor rec form, aka School Report. How.much time that takes depends on how much of it the counselor actually fills out.

Don't worry. It's going to be fine.

OP, tell her to request the transcripts now, anyway. Get the app in asap. And just get the HS request in. Our HS was always behind on what they were suppose to do.

Many high schools have this process so that they have enough time to get it all done. They know full well that some students will forget to request by the high school's artificial deadline.

That does not mean the high school will fail to get it done. Just submit the request now. And submit the apps by the app deadline. In all likelihood, the high school will get it done.

Also keep in mind that many colleges allow a grace period after the deadline for receiving documents from the high school. This is unstated. When it's past the deadline and the school docs are still not submitted, call the admissions office to ask about this.

Most document deadlines, even for 10/15 app deadlines, are not until November.
