Need a boost of excitement and fantasy to get them through the misery of married life at home.

This.

We could have ended the thread right here. Every post explaining why they do it fits into the pp's explanation.

I’m a very outgoing, inquisitive and a positive person. I’m not flirting but sometimes people see it that way, thankfully not my husband who knows I’m just being me. If being interested in someone’s life and interests is flirting that is very sad.

+1.

But I would also be curious to know what flirting means to OP. Banter, laughing, eye contact is fun and you get to be seen and appreciated with fresh eyes. Overtly sexual comments, sexual innuendos etc would make me highly uncomfortable and I would categorize this more as hitting on than flirting.

Stop showing your ankles at work, OP! You're a shameless hussy!

This. Marriage is dead. Flirting isn't going anywhere because I have integrity and a kid still at home, but the exchange reminds me that I'm still me and desirable.

Also agree with this. I love my spouse but he is in his own world and I don't get the attention I want. I guess this is the natural casualty of a long marriage. I need some excitement and validation I don't get at home.

Because it's fun. For a lot of people, it's particularly fun when you know it's safe and that no one is ever going to actually proposition you.

If you don't understand that, I feel sorry for you.
