List CHRVA-affiliated clubs for junior players (i.e., non-adults) should be listed here: https://www.chrvajuniors.org/juniors/contacts_clubs/clubs_results.CFM (may have to click 'Search' to populate the list)

There are 120 or so clubs in the region, with 15 or so exclusively dedicated to beach play. Of course, this doesn't mean that the remaining clubs all participate in tournaments during the usual indoor club season.

The website: https://americanvolleyballclubnorth.sportngin.com/
It is located in Beltsville MD, so I am surprised that they organize the tryouts at Walter Johnson and at Wootton. It might be possible that they are targeting to Bethesda / Rockville area and practices won't be close to where their mailing address / office is.
Surprisingly, they ask you to register for tryouts without telling you how much the club fees are going to be. I am curious whether they align their fees with other clubs in Maryland, or they charge the crazy Virginia fees. They might be competitive in the former case, but they will turn into another DMV in the latter case (they will only attract players who cannot make it into a better, more affordable club).

Coach Vido replied to a comment on Instagram saying that they will be based in Beltsville: https://www.instagram.com/p/DNdYWbht8kF/
Still not clear whether this is just an office location or they will practice in Beltsville. If they practice in Beltsville, the tryout locations are mind-boggling.

We understand that these are popular clubs that usually have a lot of people trying out. The first two I heard are harder to make due to the small turnover.
I've been looking for lesser known club but they are either not in our area (Tenley, DC). Or, have gotten bad reviews. What are some lesser know clubs they you are all trying out for? Want to go somewhere where my daughter has more of a chance to make the team.

If you plan to try out for MOCO, you should sign up for their club prep sessions:

Or not. Trying out for MOCO as a beginner 9th grader is a waste of time and money. This player will likely spend the whole tryout on the 3rd court with nobody watching her.

Unless they play setter or middle. Then they might get a second look.

Do you really believe a beginner setter has a chance to make a MOCO U15 team? Do you know how many setters with club experience try out for MOCO? This is more than wishful thinking. She will be just part of the wrong side of the statistics. To compete with a middle with club experience you need to be very tall and athletic if you don't have club experience. You don't know if this is the case here. This is part of a series of posts trying to increase tryout participation at MOCO just for the sake of it. If you were honest about it, you would have told this parent that the chances are minimal, not just "go ahead and try MOCO"

1. The OP who posted about trying out for MOCO said she's going for U14.

2. In any given season Setters can be one of the hardest positions to find great people for. In our years of DDs playing volleyball in the DMV, weak Setters on what should be very good teams was the most regular shortcoming we experienced. Not at all for every team, but for too many.

Agreed though that some here are just trying to drum up more business for MOCO. And trying hard.

I don’t think it’s someone trying to drum up business. As you said, the PP indicated the clubs they were trying out for, and MOCO was listed. One of the responses to that was to attend a clinic before tryouts. That’s the same advice that is given to anyone trying out for a more well-known club.

Completely agree that discussing MOCO in the lesser-known club thread doesn’t make sense though—-as others have said they get a lot of interest at the U14 age and it’s hard to make a team without experience and/or great physical/athletic attributes.

Finally we get to a consensus about the best advice to give a family that is entering the club scene. I wish I had this kind of advice to become realistic and adjust expectations during our first year of club volleyball. Hopefully more realistic decisions will work better for other families that request guidance.

This is why so many people suggest going to club clinics prior to tryouts. Use the clinic to figure out if you are capable of playing the level of volleyball that is represented at those clinics. Keep in mind some clubs have multiple skill levels for their clinics and that many of the potential players aren’t in the gym, so the clinics can represent a lower ability level than the players who will make a team.

The above is true for any of the larger/established clubs that have clinics ahead of time—which is virtually all of them now.

For the lesser known/smaller clubs that don’t have clinics, reaching out directly to them is often a good way to get equivalent information and avoid wasting time or money at a tryout. Let them know your skill level/experience and ask them about the potential fit in the club and see what they say.

Are you seriously listing MOCO on a thread about lesser known clubs? Please avoid offering advice to people who are not familiar with the volleyball scene because you are only providing hope where there is none. Since the tryout period is short, people need realistic advice, not ideas on how to waste their time and money.

I didn’t say you’ll get a spot, but you will be noticed. Same for tall middles. DS’s are a dime a dozen and tend to be the ones that languish on a lower court.

I would not be concerned about MOCO not having enough setters at the tryouts. My DD is a setter and tried out for MOCO U14 team (she had one year of club experience at the time). She may not be a great setter but she likely sets better than a beginner. She didn't make any MOCO team. Suggesting that beginners try out for MOCO at U14 level is simply poor advice. MOCO would happily take your tryout money, keep you on the lowest court, never invite you at callbacks, then brag about how busy they were at the tryouts.

MOCO keeps saying that they want to give everyone a chance to try out, but they complain about capacity. If they were really concerned about capacity, they could filter out some players who have absolutely no chance. They would use the courts for players with a realistic chance of making a MOCO team, and they would make a huge favor to the rest of the players who could focus on trying out elsewhere.

Inexperienced 11u or 12u is common. As you get in the older groups, most of the girls have club experience. You can still shine if athletic and tall but realistically, at 14u, you are up against girls who have been playing since 11.

100% totally agree. You don't have to take club prep sessions at all to try out. Unless you are laser-focused on MOCO, it isn't worth the money most likely. Most of the girls on my DD's team the years she played with them never took prep sessions. Including at the younger ages.
