I find this MD vs VA crazy driver posts silly. They are all over DMV area. It’s the region, not which state tag you have.

It needs to be enforced, by humans. Where are all the state troopers? We need more.

It’s not that they are “just” speeding. They are also very bad drivers, weaving, illegal maneuvers, etc. Imo a big difference whether driving fast, recklessly, and oblivious to physics, or going faster than the limit in an empty left lane.

Of course it's about speeding. What's a better way to deter people from speeding than a financial disincentive? Seriously asking.

Only if collection is actually enforced. Should also lead to loss of license for reckless speeds!

You can still drive without a license. It's just another ticket. We aren't German.

What?? Virginia drivers are totally wild. Every time I see a crazy, dangerous driver in Maryland, the plates are almost always Virginia.

Good one, PP.

How about this VA driver that intentionally ran over a motorcyclist?

There are daily posts in the nova reddit forum about the insane VA drivers. For example:

Sorry that you refuse to see what's right before your eyes: VA drivers are insane.

When I go the speed limit or even nine miles over it, I have cars lining up behind me or passing around me. It's crazy how much people speed now.

Starting Oct. 1, automated cameras across the state will begin mailing out tiered tickets based on how much over the speed limit you’re driving. The new tier structure was passed by the Maryland General Assembly and signed by Gov. Wes Moore in May.

It starts at 12 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit with a $40 fine.
For those 16 to 19 miles per hour over the limit, the fine rises to $70.
A $120 fine is for speeders going 20 to 29 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Those going 30 to 39 miles per hour will get a $230 fine and the stiffest fines of $425 are for speeding over 40 mph

These seem very low. Fines should start at $250 and go up by multiples. 16-19 miles over should be $500. This is a joke.

Seems low to me, too. I was nearly taken out on I-270 by someone swerving back and forth across lanes and going 70 or more in a 55.

Speeding starts a 1 mph over the posted limit. 31 in a 30 is speeding. Period. It’s a speed LIMIT, not a speed MINIMUM. Compliance with the law requires you to be AT the speed limit, or slower.

Fines should start at 1 mph over, not 12. That’s ridiculous.

DC gives drivers traffic camera tickets for everything. Last year, it handed out 3.3 million tickets (and they are expensive!). It has accomplished nothing.

You need to be going 10 over the speed limit in DC for the cameras to trigger. It's not written into DC law, but the police are on record saying this. I always go 8 or so over, even when passing the cameras, and have never gotten a ticket.

That's crazy, but it should be a percent, not a number. So going 12 MPH over a 30 is 40% over, is the same fine as 22 MPH over a 55 (also 40%).
