Either way, my kid would be avoiding that house in the future.

Agree. I think what feels creepy to me is that the mom is judging other parents' parenting (she thinks the kids shouldn't have phones), and doing it in a physical way -- she's forcing the kids to take off watches and hand over phones. That's pretty extreme. How about saying, "no electronics during this play date, please" and then check on the kids from time to time instead.

My child wouldn't go back, and she doesn't have a phone or a watch.

I think it's interesting that you inferred judgment here. I don't. I just think the mom wants to host a phone-free playdate.

If the house has a phone basket policy, I bet their kids have phones and that's how the basket came to be. I doubt they have a phone basket just for other kids -- it's likely how they get their kids to stay off phones for family time too.

I don't see the difference between this and a house with a no TV during playdates rule, which I'd also appreciate.

Exactly. 10 years olds with phones is nuts.

A lot of them have watches.

I would want the mother to let me know ahead of time and I would like my child to have access to her device at all times (e.g., mom isn't taking the phones and putting them away somewhere, they are all in a basket by the front door and if a kid wants to text mom, they can go use their device at any time).

Eh, if you're going to confiscate things, you should tell the parents beforehand. I would be fine a parent asking the kids to put phones away. Not fine with her taking them.

The phone is put away in the basket.

My kid was thrilled when parents did that when she was in middle school. She said that when kids had their phones, they just watched videos together and didn't engage. None of the kids knew how to suggest that they put their phones away, so it was great when the parents did.

I would be thrilled too! Fully support - we also have a no electronics playdate rule or only on family tv in front of everyone.

This feels weird and creepy in a way that I can’t quite articulate.

Either way, my kid would be avoiding that house in the future.
