Switzerland is extremely expensive, and if you'd require private English-language education for children it becomes even more so. It's a wonderful country, but the cost of living is not one of the attractions. It should be no surprise that the employer is uninterested in providing the very high level of compensation you'd need to live there comfortably if they have a viable alternative. The alternative may be a different candidate who would be happy to work for that employer without being on site.

If the comp seemed to you to be sufficient for Swiss life, and you understand the cost of living there, it is an attractive package for someone who need not relocate from their U.S. base and who wouldn't face the taxation issues described upthread.

That's because it IS a bait and switch if the main attraction was Switzerland. Good expat packages cost a lot, and are becoming more rare as people can work remotely.

Plus the dollar is down 10% against their currency. It's even cheaper to keep you in the US and pay you in USD.

Do you know anyone on the inside who can tell if you there a business argument for your location in Switzerland? It's EXPENSIVE there, at least Geneva- way more $$ than NYC

+1 You have nothing to negotiate OP, because they are not offering you an expat package. They *might* in the future, but there's no way for us to judge whether that will actually occur.
