Fair warning. Farmer Boy didn't scare me when I was 6, but it scared my son when he was 7-8. It opens with a teacher brandishing a whip because the teens had beat the previous teacher to death.

DS8 loved that one! Wind in the Willows we never got through, but maybe we could try again. I always thought it was a preschool read aloud so I think we tried it too early.

For Wild Robot lovers, how are the rest of the books. We read the first, I think there are two more titles?

Wind in the Willows is actually a hard read. While a younger child may enjoy it, an older child would get a lot more out of it. It’s a beautiful book and the themes about friendship are complex

Personal anecdote: my kids and I could never get into The Wind in the Willows. We've read most of the other suggestions on that thread, but just found it boring. I know in some people's minds that's almost a crime.

Have only heard good things about the entire Wild Robot series (all my kids read them to themselves, so I have not).

I like Wind in the Willows but some chapters are better than others. I personally find the whole Toad plot line a bit annoying but I like the other bits.
