Onions release ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening and sprouting of potatoes, while potatoes release moisture that causes onions to rot. To properly store them, keep potatoes in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place, such as a cardboard box or burlap bag, and store onions in a separate cool, dark, and dry location, like a mesh bag or basket, as far apart as possible.

Anonymous wrote:I know you're supposed to store potatoes and onions outside the fridge, but they always sprout and spoil when I do it. I guess my house is too warm/humid, even in the winter. For that reason, I store them in the fridge, together, because there isn't really enough space to keep them apart. The onions keep pretty well but the potatoes have to be used within 2-3 weeks or they turn softer and sweet tasting. (Not spoiled, but not the freshest.)

Who does this? Fridge? So weird
Most Americans store onions and potatoes in the fridge because we don't have a need to store an entire season's worth of food in our root cellar.
This can't be true for "most Americans." No one in my large extended family fridges their potatoes.
I’ve never met anyone who stores potatoes in the refrigerator.

I had no idea they couldn't be stored together. I have them next to each other in my kitchen. They seem ok.
