Are they diesel? That might be your answer.

I'd actually bothered by the noise of the engine if I had to sit for longer than a minute. If I sit in my car, I want to hear what is happening outside.
Luckily I don't go anywhere that requires me to sit in the car. I wouldn't know how long someone else idles as I keep walking.
