Keep it simple. I'm a middle-aged person in NYC, and this sort of thing is my go-to fall uniform for when I'm running around town:

A few notes:

• Comfortable footwear is key . . . sneakers or a sturdy boot.

• Carry a smaller bag with just your essentials, and make sure there is a place to keep your phone and wallet secure.

• November weather often ranges anywhere from the 30s to the 60s, so check the forecast and layer accordingly. If you can find a way to get away with not wearing a bulky coat, that's key . . . so maybe a sweater under a heavier blazer or a wind-resistant trench coat.

• If you want to maximize your layering options, I recommend buying this compact puffer from Uniqlo . . . it scrunches up enough to easily stuff it into a bag, it's warm but not bulky, and it's cut like a classic, ladylike cardigan sweater so it looks more sophisticated than sporty. https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E469862-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=003. They also have a similar vest, if you prefer that. https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E469863-000/00?colorDisplayCode=10&sizeDisplayCode=003

• If you want to liven things up, do it with accessories . . . a colorful scarf, an animal print belt, a cute hat, a red bag.

Just wear what makes you comfortable in darker colors.

Like others have said the most important thing is comfortable shoes and a secure bag.

The funny thing about NYC is that if you’re not from here you will still look like you’re not a New Yorker - and that’s ok!

I think the most important thing is to not look like a walking target - staring at the sky, mouth agape, purse completely open, cell phone in hand, wearing flip flops or high heels.

Just be aware of your surroundings and walk with a sense of purpose.

And whatever you do not walk three people across the sidewalk and please keep up with the pace of foot traffic.

That’s like the one thing New Yorkers universally hate about tourists - blocking the gosh darn sidewalk.

THE most important thing is comfortable shoes because you will be walking a lot.
