You need to get better at scanning emails. I also check in the night before for about 30 mins after extended time off to ensure nothing is urgent for the morning. Don’t be replaceable or you might get replaced.

I get why you feel you need to do this but this is not normal or healthy. My husband has been like this all year and it is straining our marriage.

Was your boss’s email urgent?

So many people on DCUM are unable to read accurately and attacking OP for not knowing how to do email, so I'm fixing OPs post for them:

I took Friday off. First PTO day off in 8.5 months. A single day. With a months' notice.

Boss emailed at noon on Friday. Monday was a holiday, I saw the email on Tuesday at 9:34 and replied as soon as I saw it. At 2 pm he complained about 'a lack of responsiveness.'

Boss has unrealistic expectations and doesn't know how to treat, let alone recognize, hard-working staff so I will coast and slack until I get fired.

Just an FYI for all your small SBOs that think you own your staff.

Your boss should have saved you from 5 hours of email catchup and jsut told you what they wanted today.
