I've done the same and... it's exactly the same, maybe a bit inferior to the store brought product (I don't have an industrial food processor to get it super smooth).
Growing your own pumpkin can be a kind if fun project (though protecting them from the animals is a challenge and a half). But as far as being worth the effort to roast and puree, nah, not really.
