Bill Gates was already well off. His dad was a name partner at one of the largest firms in the country - KL Gates - yeah they are the same Gates. Now, Bill obviously did well for himself but he had money to begin with.

Get a job in commercial real estate working on the developer side or the construction management side. Larger developers and REITs do it all in-house, especially those that do build-to-suit projects. This is the path my DH took with his CE degree. He later got an MBA as well.
He could also go into consulting. My brother has a CE degree and worked as an engineer with a large engineering firm for several years. He then switched to consulting, got his PMP certification, and has worked his way up the ladder at one of the Big 4 firms to become managing director in one their advisory practices.
The consulting path seems a bit more stable but maybe less lucrative. CRE has taken a couple of huge hits since 2008.

exDH's biggest complaint about college graduates is that they know the academic stuff but they haven't spent enough time in the field. They don't have the ability to move tasks around because they don't know what the order of trades is, what specific tasks can be moved to other trades, or even how a project is actually built (they know the theoretical)
Big money will come from being at the top of the food chain in a large commercial company. Side hustle money can come from having his own stamp.
get a summer job pounding nails or some other trade and get some relevant experience
