When I was younger, I loved and felt deeply about grand adventure novels with memorable characters-- His Dark Materials, Lord of the Rings, etc. The romance of adventure affected me most! Then a bit later, I loved the high emotion and intensity of books like Wuthering Heights. Or a book with characters that felt like friends, like The Secret History.
Now, I'm more drawn to works that feel like masterpieces in terms of the execution and prose. I feel wonder at how the author achieved them. This would be something like Wolf Hall. Or a book that is so evocative of a certain emotion or feeling or is just a great tale-- like The Haunting of Hill House or We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

Middlemarch by George Elliot made me feel deeply when I read it as a teen.
Now I think I am likely to feel more reading something like Mick Herron's Slow Horses series.
