But curious headed into divorce with a foreign partner what other people have done.
I can envision wanting to travel abroad with my kids one day so maybe it’s best to leave the whole control over passports thing out. Don’t want to be naive tho.
Are there any other reasons than potential kidnapping that I should be wary of my children having passports/leaving the country for travel, or a citizenship I don’t have?
OP and my attorney took my DC's US passport (notifying STBX's attorney) and also deals with parental abduction cases. I think it is not abnormal for attorneys to hold passports while divorces are being worked out, but like many here I am in circles where many have dual citizenship so my sample may be skewed. We haven't gotten so far as dealing with what happens when I actually want to go on a trip with DC one day abroad- honestly, the way things are shaking out, I probably won't be able to afford it for a long time. It's on my list of things that need to be dealt with in conversations/negotiations but there is other stuff to sort through first and I don't want that to be a distraction.
