Yes you can definitely purchase one at any time but they’re never going to be cheaper than they are the day you buy the car.
We’ve bought a lot of these and they’ve always paid for themselves.

I have a 2 year BMW which I recently purchased. Still have 1 year and about 15,000 miles on the original warranty, but I purchased an extra 2 years warranty.
