Op here. I'm aware but my current is from one of those cities and he did not grow up obsessed with wealth despite growing up having plenty. Myself I grew up with a mother who came from generational wealth but she married my dad for love and I plan to do the same.

This, although people are curious about your wealth when they think you may have it or may have more money than they do and they can't figure out how or why you do. It bugs them. You see this usually in the workplace (co-workers who earn more, have more education, a higher title etc), but it can happen any where that a stranger is bold or rude or delusion enough to ask.

I think this is prevalent in MANY places- certainly not just the DMV- in my opinion, this is a very sheltered, naive viewpoint.

OP must not travel beyond the DMV area much. Try going to any affluent area of any major US city and you will find the same thing (New York, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, Miami, etc). It’s everywhere not just DC.

I’m from DC. Old mid-Atlantic money valued power. Open obsession with money was considered vulgar. It was seen as in poor taste to openly flaunt. LA transplants bring an open obsession with money. NY and SF is somewhere in between. The Washingtonian covered the cultural clash.

DC attracts parasites, politicians, lawyers, etc.

I've known people from Europe, Asia, and Latin America who also are obsessed with wealth. Not just DC and not just USA.
