Here's a list of recent(ish) events that have made me thankful I had some basic prep on hand:
Asst. cuts/scrapes
power outages
a busted water pipe that left us without water for a few days
storms/flooding (I got to use the cordless mini chainsaw to take down some downed branches, which was fun)
my car breaking down and needing to use it as shelter for several hours
a neighbor's minor kitchen fire that would've been a major problem if we didn't have multiple extinguishers
Everyone in our house getting noro and missing the weekly shopping trip (so we used "deep pantry" stash)
the ability to help strangers I encounter on the road (I carry cables, a compressor, and a few other car-specific tools)
More than anything, it helps me feel a bit of control over things I can't control. I don't worry about the power going out because we have backup plans. If things go really wrong, I'll be able to keep my family safe for a bit and help my neighbors get through it. Not having a basic kit is like betting that you'll never have problems. I wouldn't take that bet in this or any political climate.
