The birthday has probably passed already but you can see if teachers at your local elementary or middle school have book wish lists (often on Amazon). You can also call your local independent bookstore and ask if they have any schools scheduled for a sale. Politics and Prose in DC has days where a percentage of sales go to a school. And, (at least before Covid), you could pick books off specific teachers list buy them and turn them into the volunteers for the school. So, if she lives nearby, you could take her with you to choose the books.

This is a great idea. You can ask the niece if she wants to choose the books that are donated, and maybe you can take her to lunch or something.
