Providence: RISD Museum is really cool to check out.

Food: go to Gift Horse restaurant, chef just won the James Beard award. Also really enjoyed Oberlin for dinner.

And Flo’s Clam Shack!

We visited Providence and walked around during the July 4th time frame a few years back.

I agree with Newport. We visited. Saw J.K. Rowling/Johnny Depp's former yacht in the Harbor. Took a bus tour and saw the Breakers. I wish we had more time to do the cliff walk.

We liked the "The Graduate" hotel. I noticed brochures about WaterFire when I was there...I wish we could have seen that.

The town was pretty dead when we were there but there were several theaters on the walking tour map. I'd look for a play or show.

- telling me where my kid should ED2 to

The Google poster had a point.

And this one is also unhelpful.

Thanks to most!!

The poster didn’t have to be snarky about it, but the travel forum is actually a good resource. I got great suggestions for restaurants in Richmond and very helpful advice about traffic and hotels before out college trip there.

RISD is excellent and much better than it appeared on the website, although perhaps I didn't explore the website enough. It's free on Sundays.

Where and how long are you staying? You can walk almost anywhere and there's a free shuttle bus to the ferry dock to go to Newport, depending on where you are staying. Then (this may be only for the summer), there's another free shuttle in Newport that will take you to the mansions. You can get to the cliff walk by Breakers, probably other places near the bus route as well.

I loved the State House tour. That's also right across from the train station.

Are you really too dull to realize that OP might like to hear from real live people who have had real live experiences in Providence?

Anonymous wrote:Providence is a great walking city with different neighborhoods. Walk along the Providence River downtown, Walk through Federal Hill, walk to Wayland Square on tbe other side of Brown, stroll Wickenden Street. Thayer Street is the main drag of student life—stop and have a coffee.

Newport is a short drive and is worth checking out if you haven’t been there. I’m biased because I went there but I believe Brown is a perfectly located school!

Agree, can even take ferry to Newport. It’s a great sized city with fun outings in close proximity with the beach and Boston. Also helps for travel to have both airport options as the train is a breeze. Have fun OP!
