Yes this is why we have a second house in Europe. We just go there, no fussing around with too much sight seeing nonsense.

Europe is crowded with tourists, too. Perhaps even more so in some places.

We are on cape cod now and it's lovely. But in a small town, in a big house with friends. Not going shopping. Just biking and beach etc. I expect our day trip to MV to be crowded but we will go on a weekday and early.

Maine and Vermont require planning if you want to avoid crowds. If you follow the tourist trail at popular times it will be very disappointing.

See all the posts about how unpleasant Bar Harbor can be. Same is true of Stowe and other spots in VT.

Maybe you need to change up what it means to you to travel. Go to second cities in states. Go off season or shoulder season. Try renting an RV and see the states not usually on people’s lists to go. Get off the coasts.

I don't think that would be any better if you concentrate on major cities suffering from overtourism.

I grew up with my grandparents retiring on cape cod and it was always a zoo in summer. I’m sure moreso now but we always loved September and thanksgiving and Christmas there. Off season Nauset is magical.

I moved west and we were in MD this summer for DCs sports tournaments as he is on a national team and the northeast corridor is intense. My family is in VT so a lot more mellow up there.

You really have to go somewhere you REALLY want to go for it to be meaningful enough to go. Too many people. Too much greed. That's just where we are now. I'm not sure going to the Vineyard in Aug was ever going to give you a different experience? You do need to manage your expectations or just do what you want to do and not complain.

I love travel when it is quieter and off season. I find places really hard to get to tend to have less tourists. Not naming them!
