I just do this in Google Sheets. We hardly use cash so there are only ways money goes out--as a debit through checking or credit card charge. I know what all of the recurring debits to checking are (e.g., mortgage, internet). We mostly use one credit card and each month I download a CSV of credit card transactions and make a pivot table. It takes about 15 minutes. I can categorize transactions as I see fit and not what the bank thinks they are.

I've tracked our finances in Quicken forever. How much did we spend on utilities/insurance/anything in 2008 v today? This year to last? This quarter to 3rd quarter last year? I got that.

You pick the categories (for both income and expenses), it's like the old paper registries but so much easier. I start typing Verizon and up comes Fios and Wireless (used different ones at different times). Or Geico and that it's an insurance payment for $221 comes up automatically.

You can also enter recurring payments (mortgage, life insurance, etc).

I use a way old version that was free, maybe still floating around. But the newer versions have a monthly sibscription so you can sync it with bank and bills. I do it manually and dont sync, and, I dont pay anything.

Paying my bills is about 30 minutes a week (on a weekend), except when Im entering a credit card payment, because I break down an $8k bill by categories (groceries, dining, charity, household, auto: fuel, auto: setvice etc).

I recommend YNAb also. It’s a budgeting app, which I know you don’t want. You just want to track. But it’s also excellent for tracking. If you want more of an accounting software then there’s Quicken. But for simple household expense tracking, I like YNAB (and as a bonus it helps reduce expenses!)

YNAB will just track your spending if that's how you want to use it. I link it to my accounts so I don't need do remember to enter the data,

It is very simple to auto-categorize payees so even that part happens automatically. Then you just need to categorize the few novel payees every week or month.

I do not think it will import past transactions, but there might be a way to do it by contacting your bank or credit card and downloading past data.

Nothing attached to Rocket is free...they sign you up for at least 4 other things and then relentlessly call/email to have you sign up for more.

DP, do either Copilot or Monarch let you split transactions? So if I spent $100 could i split it into 2 categories if I looked at the receipt and wanted it to be more accurate? Also, could I allocate some door dash to food and kids depending on?
