Yes. Bike-friendly college town out west. Kid regularly rode to school through high school, as we didn't live far enough away to justify getting a parking spot at school, but it was faster than walking, so we were all confident that it would get used. We actually bought a used bike there to avoid having to transport a bike across the country, and the old bike can still be used at home during breaks.

I wrote that mine will but he also bikes a ton for transportation at home so I feel confident he will use it there.

No, kid flew as college was about 1,000 miles away. Biking would have taken too long & probably would be dangerous due to unknown territory.

My son rides an electric scooter.

Take something cheap, see if they can store it in a dorm basement or similar. I rode a creaky cheap bike in college and no one really bothered with it.

I judged the crime rate based on the bikes - the cheaper the bike the worse crime. I found UC Santa Cruz to have the best bikes.

My son may get one when he arrives. Depends upon if he feels comfortable riding it in the city.

Perhaps, it is obvious, but you want to get a bike with tires at least 2 inches across.

Stanford is all about bikes but getting a used one there. Doesn't need to be fancy.

Get a U lock with a cable. There’s a specific way to thread the cable through the bike to deter theft. I can’t remember. But if you take the bike to your local shop for assembly and buy the lock there, they can show you how to thread it.

See if there is a bikeshare option. It keeps you from dealing with the hassles of bike ownership like theft and finding a place to store it in summer. Also good for getting back home if you end up somewhere and ubers are a long wait/expensive.
