We moved back because we didn't want to raise kids in DMV. And we have deep roots in our home city.

I lived all over the country until I was 12 and then moved to what I now consider my hometown. I met my husband in HS and after we got married we moved to New York for work but when the opportunity came to move back we both leapt at it. Both sets of parents are here and my siblings live nearby. It's a beautiful town with wonderful schools so it's hard to beat. My MS and HS best GFs live in the area and that's very special.

Posts like these always puzzle me. Everyone complains that they only came to DC for their jobs, that everyone is career obsessed, that everyone leaves, that they can’t wait to get out themselves, etc.

But that’s only the circle you all have chosen to associate with, and it’s only a reflection of who you are yourself and the choices that you yourself have made.

The fact is, the overwhelming majority of folks living in the DMV have been here a long time, are not “first generation,” and have no plans to leave. They have roots here. They sent their kids to public schools and are involved in their neighborhoods. There is more to their lives than their careers. If you haven’t come to consider where you’ve been living for decades as your “home,” then that’s a self-inflicted “you” issue.

We moved here in the late 80s. We raised our kids here. They went away to college and came back. They’re raising their kids here. Many of their friends are also still here. Many of their friends’ parents are also. This IS home so far as many of us are concerned.

Home was on the Gulf Beaches. Sometimes I think I would go home if I were widowed, but there are 3 psycho step siblings there who hated my late mother maybe for cause. I only met one but they all seemed too weird and violent.

Most of us moved to DC for our jobs and no other reason.

While I feel deeply connected to my hometown because my American ancestors have lived there for hundreds of years, it's not my favorite place to live. Economically depressed right now, lots of crime. I do visit yearly though.

Dh and I will probably move back to my home state when we retire. He was a military brat so is not connected to a place in the same way I am.

I've lived in the DMV for 32 years and for 30 of them, I have been waiting and planning to leave. Not necessarily to the "home" that I grew up in (although I do like it better), but anywhere but here. Finally able to leave next spring to a totally new area.

For me it would be "impoverished mill town" and I wouldn't be able to relate to the people who stayed there and didn't grow. Lots of drug problems too. So like a PP said, it's going to be where DH and my kids are always. Onwards and upwards!

I’m a fed living here in DC.

Nearly all my colleagues have the same plan: move back home in a few years. DC is not home to any of us. I’ll move back to California soon.
