Oh, to be clear- I definitely felt pity for it because I hated it- though clearly he was doing some kind of helpful robot job- as the store saw it- but I did not feel attached. Agree the anthropomorphic thing is a manipulation that is a bridge too far for me to find that cute or want it in my home.

Kind of like when you see an erratic homeless or addicted person in a bad situation but you don't feel safe enough to engage... I was chaperoning a high school Boston/NYC trip and was supposed to be the calm/mature adult but I was not willing to get in the same aisle as it (I literally went without snacks from aisles it was in until some of the high schoolers made a game out of running to fetch items and race back to me). But I'd be fine running from it/ hitting it with my purse if it came near me and didn't respond to verbal commands.

From a psychological perspective, that's why robots are anthropomorphized, to make humans feel pity and develop trust for the robot. It's a bad practice that has all sorts of risks in the future as A.I. and robots improve.
