I mean…your kid will easily get into some NC state school unless you will only consider Chapel Hill. Even then, in-state acceptance is pretty high.

nice but i always wonder why send your kid to private k-12 then go to public university for college?

+1 this is a fairly normal amount for one semester of tuition in-state.

Having similar experience. Younger kid’s full freight bill is still less than older kid’s tuition and fees.

I just paid my freshman’s in-state tuition, room and board, and fees for a
Maryland school. $16k. After all the worrying and fretting and saving we’ve done for the past 18 years that was a really nice check to write.

I think VA folks might be surprised at this tuition amount because VA schools are much more than this.

I think it’s confusing because room and board is such a huge cost that we rarely separate it out when calculating the cost. For me, one child will be in-state and I owe around 14,500 this semester and one will be OOS public and I own 17,500. I honestly have no idea what the difference in tuition is as it’s the total cost that concerns me. Plus, tuition without the mandatory fees which are all over the place means nothing.

Are some people confused because OP only listed tuition for a semester instead of the full year? In-state UMD is about $6k per semester so I don't understand why so many people are shocked by this.

Why glad the situation was not reversed (i.e., pay $6k for k-12 and then $35k for 4 years)?

I assume your kid would have ended up at this college if you had just done public k-12.

My oldest is at a private university. My middle is attending the public university. That was my comparison.

This is what I pay per semester for my kid at UMBC. He lives at home and commutes to school so that saves the cost of rooming him there. He previously went to community college and I couldn't get over how cheap that is (~$2500 per semester).
