I’ve had several with women and one with a man. I was very anxious about the man doing it but he was professional and the nurse as standing right there. In the end I’d rather the best person do it (the man was a specialist), even if I’m secretly wondering about and judging any man who would choose this as a job.

I have had four. Two were more painful than the other two. I have a lot of chronic plain issues so I'm pretty sensitive, and all four were bearable. And I never had a male tech. I would try not to worry too much about it.

I had one to check for ovarian cysts, and I'll echo that it is less uncomfortable than a speculum.

I’ve had many between fertility treatment, family history and fibroids. It’s not a big deal. They may start with abdominal so require a full bladder but not always. Either way, they will have you empty your bladder prior to the transvaginal portion. I am a complete wimp about all things medical but I didn’t find it to be painful or scary. You might feel a little pressure but not always. There was no pain.

Forgot to add, I've always had a female tech and yes, I had a gown draped over my lap. One of the techs asked if I'd like to insert it myself and while I was fine with her inserting it, I thought it was nice to give women the option.

I've had a few of them and I didn't find them to be painful at all. It would be a stretch to even say it was uncomfortable, but I know that a lot depends on your anatomy and reason for needing one. They don't take very long, just a few minutes. If I'm comparing things, I find mammograms more uncomfortable than a transvag ultrasound.

NP. It allows for a better view, especially of the ovaries.

I’ve had seversl transvaginal ultrasounds and they have been completely uneventful. My techs are always women.

They are very professional, clinical and it is not weird at all. One of them asked me if I wanted to insert it myself or Have her do it. There is a lot of lube involved and they try and make the experience as easy as possible. It is a medical procedure and they approach it as such.

You feel pressure, but it’s minimal.

What would a transvaginal u/s be used instead of the kind across the stop of the stomach? What is the benefit?

I'd see if this kind is really necessary or not.

I have these annually due to a family history of ovarian cancer. It's awkward but not painful or difficult.

Agree with everyone’s comments. The pushing/pressure to get good images can be uncomfortable but the insertion for the internal ultrasound went smoothly. You can also request to insert the wand yourself; in fact some offices require the patient to do so. That part was easy-peasy. There’s a drape laid over the abdomen and below during the tvu. The techs were all women, and gentle and professional.

I am a Nurse Practitioner who has had one and send many patients to get them. I agree that it was uncomfortable when they were trying to find both ovaries.

Some patients find it painful- as they do Paps and intercourse.

Shame on you.

OP- as in all things, people’s experiences are different, but vast majority of women, at least in my experience, do great.
