Maybe the nature of the sport? They spend a lot of time offsite without parents, so the athletes are more vulnerable to predatory behavior?

It's a safety issue too.

Where players that aren't at the same level as others risk hurting themselves or others.

School sports really got ruined by yearround, travel, and aau sports, making it really competitive and hard to make it onto teams.

But there's other avenues to play if someone doesn't make a team. ie they can play with their friends on the playground, rec leagues, etc.

There are some nonschool tryout teams that carry a large roster. But I've often heard complaints from families on those teams where players never see the field or floor during games or even practice. Would that be better? Or then does it get to that people start demanding equal playing time too?

When I was a kid (not MCPS) some of the most popular sports had a freshman team, then JV and Varsity. I do think that the field space and daylight hours could be a problem. And if they did that across the board, the budget for sports would presumably need to be 50% more.

What percentage of the students play a sport in a given year?

When it comes down to it, HS sports is about competition. You want everyone to be able to play, join a rec league.
