If you are unemployed, it is better to downsize and live with family or rent in a lower COLA while renting out your house here. That can give you a bit of income while avoiding foreclosure.

Again, you’re not a random sample. See previous post. It may be “widespread” in your circle, but from a metropolitan area standpoint not so much.

There are 387 metropolitan areas in the USA. The average unemployment rate in them is 4.0.

The current unemployment rate in the greater DMV is 3.6, tied for 153rd with 22 others including Pittsburgh and Charlotte.

Large metro areas with higher unemployment rates than the DMV include NYC, Philadelphia,
San Francisco, San Diego, and Chicago among others.

While the greater DMV is typically at or near the very low end of unemployment rates among large metro areas, the sky hasn’t fallen just yet.

Yes, the DOGE firings and the fallout are real, but folks on this website are disproportionately experiencing it because of who you are and who you associate with. You are not a random sample of the DMV.

A few I know with young kids will probably just belt tighten and ride it out since their interest rates are so low and other spouse is still employed. Plus they are paid through the summer.

It’s already happening. Two friends are moving back to small town PA to live with their elderly parents. Both are two Fed families with multiple kids. One is going to do some consulting work while her DH commutes into Pittsburgh. The other is going to sub until she catches her breath.

There are literally tons of jobs. And people got severance then unemployment for six months. If couple have kids in day care and one is laid off they might actually be making money till severance and unemployment runs out.

someone at work with a 2 and 4 year old in day care and paid though 9/30 then gets unemployment for six months till March 30 might say screw it and wait till Fall 2026 to start a new job when older one is in Public school and younger one in Pre-K. I would.

Now if both laid off a different story or if no kids at home. But day care on multiple kids is terrible.

I think the full effects won’t be felt until summer is over. A lot of laid off feds are still getting paid until September and a lot of leases end in the summer. It doesn’t feel like an area recession yet but I think it will in the wintertime.
