If the daycare is requiring it then you’ll have to use them. Our pool required swim diapers for kids under 4 , my kids still wore them despite being potty trained since before 2. Having an accident at home isn’t like daycare where they are on a chair or rug that other children are using and needing outfit changes and cleaning up when there are a lot of other kids needing to be watched. If he is having multiple accidents like this he is not really trained yet. He can wear pull ups at daycare and you can use underwear at home. If he is still not initiating even after being upset about the clothing changes then I don’t see him really being ready for underwear at daycare right now.

Ultimately it is the rules of the daycare. Like it or not, if the daycare is requiring him to wear Pull Ups until he shows more consistent training then you have two choices. Either send the Pull Ups or don’t send him to that daycare.

My kids were potty trained at 3 (oldest), 2.5, and currently potty training at 3.5 (almost there, but still some struggles). The only one who went to daycare was our oldest and she had to wear diapers or pull ups until she was consistently trained (an occasional accident after was understood). Like most others, she couldn’t move to the 3s room until out of Pull Ups. Now, this was a decade ago, but I think most daycares still operate in the same way.

Our preschool didn't potty train until the kids were 2.5 or later. they had to be potty trained to get into the older 3s room (started at 3.5) or wearing pull-ups to get into the 3s room.

3 is the right age to potty train. We did it in two weeks.


Ours wouldn't allow anyone to move up to the 3 year old room until they were potty trained. Absolutely no pull ups, either. The older 2s teachers were wizards when it came to getting those kids trained. There was always some 3 year old (sometimes more than one) stuck in the older 2s room because they weren't trained, but the director always held firm that the 3s room required being potty trained. No amount of teeth gnashing and complaining by parents would make her change her mind.


This. Our daughter was trained at two becsuse the school trained the twos room in December no exceptions. Kids who joined later in the year couldn’t go to threes unless they were trained.
