My friend's son goes to Haverford. He has a girl friend at Bryn Mawr -- his second in two years -- and takes at least two classes per term there. From what he reports, that is common.

I imagine Bryn Mawr leans into the consortium during tours bc many potential students, even though attracted to an all-women's college atmosphere for some reasons, are reluctant to commit to single sex education. Tour guides like to present Bryn Mawr as the best of both worlds.

TBH the story about this kid is kinda creepy.

It’s creepy that a guy at Haverford has dated a couple of women at Bryn Mawr and taken classes there? When I was at BMC in the 90s that was very normal. Why do you find it creepy?

Reposted because replies are all messed up on this thread for some reason.

To say Kenyon is in the middle of nowhere is an understatement. It is literally surrounded by cornfields. There is no town whatsoever, just a small strip of college-owned and operated shops adjacent to campus. They do emphasize the location as something students have to be aware of when visiting. But until we saw it in person we didn’t realize the magnitude of the rural setting.

My daughter is at Smith but we visited most of the seven sisters and we were disappointed by BM. I’m sure it’s lovely as a student but it just didn’t seem to have much personality and the dorms were not good. Haverford was also on our list and we liked it but it is very small even for a SLAC. She is thriving at Smith.

Huh? Some majors (like some languages) are only at Bryn Mawr, and some are only at Haverford, and certain concentrations within majors, so students from either school can end up taking a lot of classes on the other campus depending on what they study. And a Haverford guy dating a Bryn Mawr woman is hardly "creepy"?

Amherst is better.

It is rough for Jewish students though Chabad and Hillel are strong and a respite. The good news is the new president is acting quickly to protect students. For example when the pro Palestine group interrupted admitted students day. That said the academics are strong.

The surrounding area is heavily Jewish, so something isn't adding up here.

Do they reject anyone Jewish/Israeli, or anyone who is Zionist? I suspect it's the latter.

Every college in America is Zionist.

I concur with the previous poster mentioning Bryn Mawr is a place resting on past laurels and that time has passed it. I had the same impression 30 years ago and not surprised it's not changed. It was a premier women's college from its founding till the 70s when the Ivies and other LACs went coed, and the cream of the crop of women started going to Princeton and Yale or Amherst instead of the Seven Sisters. Back in the day Bryn Mawr was probably the third most rigorous women's college, after Radcliffe and Wellesley, so the name meant something for several generations.

In the 90s into early 2000s, it meant a Bryn Mawr student had access to resources and faculty of a more prestigious school but with a less prestigious student body. This can be a nice advantage. But I do remember being on campus several times in the early 2000s when a grad student at Penn and invited to social events at Bryn Mawr through a connection, and finding the campus so quiet and dull. On a Friday night! If you're looking for more of a hustle and bustle and activity it sounds like Bryn Mawr isn't the place. Even Kenyon, a school I've been to, had more going on, in a sense the isolation forces more activity within campus.

What this means is certain students would be fine with the quiet nature of Bryn Mawr but others will age out of very quickly.

^^^^posted above and messed up the post somehow----meant to say this about why Bryn Mawr seems more invested in the consortium:

If I had to guess, it's to quell concerns about the dating and social life of women in a women's college. My DD goes to Swarthmore and confirms that most of the social overlap in the consortium is between Bryn Mawr and Haverford. She has friends at Bryn Mawr and goes to parties at Haverford with them.

His behavior is definitely not the norm for Haverford students. I don't recall seeing more than one male student in any classroom during our tour and zero male students in the dining hall during lunch. If others at Haverford actually do take half their classes at Bryn Mawr, it would be a lot more noticeable. I can only guess at his motivation, but he's definitely not typical there.
