Cherry is so cute! These days kids like to pick names for themselves. I get that for some parents there’s a bit of a grieving process with this, but ultimately it is her decision at this age about what she wants to be called.

However, she's now saying that it's a "middle-aged white woman name" (keep in mind that she is white) and demanding that we call her "Cherry". She's already got her friends to call her Cherry and plans to start high school introducing herself to classmates and teachers as Cherry. I'm not a fan. In addition to the inappropriate associations that cherries can have, Sharon is her name. It's a wonderful, lovely name, and now she's saying that she wants to be called a piece of fruit? I don't get it. WWYD?

You don’t have to support her, but you won’t be able to stop her either. So you can either get on board and have a happy child or be a contrarian and have a strained and negative relationship with her. Your choice.
She doesn’t need your permission to introduce herself as a different name.
