Omg this warms my heart! My ES kid has a preschool friend like this who he would say at age 4-5 that he wanted to marry. I recently read a sweet news story where it ended up happening!

Are you me? I have the same issue. Our friends from daycare were so great. Our families meshed well, activities lined up, kids got along great.

I think it boils down to daycare families being at the same SES scale as you. We all make similar amounts, with similar interests, we're all into our kids' academics, and we live near each other. Whereas school kids come from all over. Many have backgrounds where they don't socialize outside of their extended families.

My DS just had a big birthday party. We invited all the boys in his class at school, as well as friends from soccer and daycare. One kid from school showed up, but the whole daycare showed up. No one from school even responded to the invite.

This is totally inapposite. The whole question was if they can stay friends if they do not regularly interact/go to school with. I don't think anyone is under the impression that it's unusual for kids who have been friends from a young age and then go to school and aftercare together to stay friends...
