Agree this is simply the country we live in. The camp was built in a dumb place between two estuaries. It became a toilet bowl and the kiddos were turds. Could happen to anyone. Did you think you were living in the Netherlands all this time?

What's worse - 550 people in NOAA taking early retirement causing this flood or the BBB cutting NOAA in 2026 causing this flood?

He is President. Texas is completely Republican. Republicans laid off thousands of federal scientists including those with the NWS. They cut civilian use of the military weather satellites. They're spending FEMA money at "Alligator Alcatraz". At this point I'd call this is Republican on Republican violence.

If you are paying careful attention to the locations and rates of the precipitation you in fact can try to predict when and where the flooding will occur. And the more data and experience and research that you put into it will increase the accuracy of the flooding predictions.

100% this. As someone that lived in central Texas for many years, it's well known that flooding happens there. A few years ago Bastrop flooded for example. Remember when Ellicott City flooded? They built out infrastructure to prevent it in the future. Does Texas do this? No. Will Texas do this now? No. It's like when the Texas power grid collapsed and people were practically freezing to death. Texas loves claiming they're independent. It's a really bad state.

The NWS forecasting offices were operating normally at the time of the disaster, said Greg Waller, service coordination hydrologist with the NWS West Gulf River Forecast Center in Fort Worth.

Would you have said the same thing if we had a President Harris (or even Biden)? Nah, you would have blamed Governor Abbott, and if that didn't stick, then climate change.

The relevance to 1997 and 2025, flooding is whether people received prior warnings. If they were warned in 1997, and had opportunities to evacuate, it proves OP’s point that lack of warning contributed to the 2025 deaths.
