It’s about height not age.

Most children need a booster seat until they are about 4'9" (57 inches)

Though younger kids also have more fragile bodies

We have found them pretty grumpy and quite expensive

Mine is 8.5 and 90 percentile for height and weight, plus a 6 yr old, and I still plan on taking them when we go to Minnesota in a couple weeks. I hadnt even considered the fact they would outgrow boosters soon, why risk it?

We used a Bubble Bum or borrowed one at our destination. We’d take occasional Ubers without a booster.

By age 9 though I don’t think I’d travel with it.

Same. My above average sized 7year old isn’t even in a booster anymore.

At that size I would. Kid can carry it and store it in the overhead bin.

If we’re renting a car we bring the booster. It’s not too painful to bring. Last year we went to a city where we didn’t rent a car, but took some taxis. We borrowed a bubble bum for that.

We had a bumble bum or whatever it’s called. Super easy to pack and travel with.

We used a bubble bum. If you don’t want to make the purchase take the backless. You have no idea how high the seatbelt will be in a rental or family members car.

Our 8 year old is bigger than yours and we still travel with the bubble bum. We were glad to have it when we got in an accident internationally a few months ago. The driver even told us we didn’t need to use it legally where we were, but man I’m glad we did anyway.

So kid is still in a car seat? Or you drive him around with no regard for safety or the law in many states?

Yes, it’s easy and free to check or gate check. We did it last year with our short 10 yo. She carried it at the airport. There’s really no reason not to if your kid still needs one and you’ll be driving at your destination.
