My parents moved my sister in high school and it was really tough on her. So I'd really consider the impact on the kids.

need a lot more information but my gut is no, not unless your job in DC is at risk. You earn plenty here and presumably have your kids in public schools. Pulling them out at their ages and putting them in new public schools is going to be rough and likely mean you have to locate in a suburb with a long commute. I know people with kids in NYC publics doing great but these are star kids and parents have lots of experience positioning them for opportunities (Hunter, Stuy, Bronx Science, etc). I don’t think you can expect to just walk into that.

Presumably you also have a spouse whose opinion matters here?

On the other hand, I can see how and additional $200k could be important to pay for college. If you feel like you need that money to send your kids to college then uprooting may be worth it.

Where in NY would you work and can you do hybrid work? Does your spouse work and can they find work there? The nyc HS options are so terrible and stressful. So I wouldn’t do it unless there was a reasonable commute from westchester or NJ. Some people even commute in from dutchess county on metronorth (like beacon where the houses are still pretty afffprdable).
I think it would also depend on whether you e got a house here that you bought when interest rates were low and are in a decent school district If you have that, and are living comfortably at 260k, I’d be reluctant to give that up. If you have to pay private school in NY, that 200K difference (closer to 100K after taxes) will disappear fast. (Although if you are catholic there are some decent Catholic HS options that are cheaper).

Don’t know if your kids are in public or private, but if in public you need to be satisfied with the public options in NYC. Many are actually good though all school selection is basically done through application (ie there may be a good school right next to you but you don’t just get to attend).

If you decide private, then of course you are paying at least $50k each (and likely more).

You can avoid by living in a suburb though your property taxes will be very high…guess you would now get some benefit from the new tax laws.
