and to be clear, only a fraction of kids on NYU team attend Stern - so social circle likely to be less of the so-called “insufferable” stern kids!

Both are obviously great schools, and your child will be well placed out of either. I agree that the city life should be a factor. Does your kid like NYC and big city life? Do they want a college campus or a city? Pittsburgh is smaller, more affordable place to live, and CMU is more of a traditional college campus. What experience does your child want?

OP's son is an athlete, not a math nerd. He will never in his life time go to Jane Street doing quantitative.
Citadel will recruit from CMU math or SCS, not from Tepper.
It's a non-question that runs two pages long.

The alumni network for the particular sport and how rabid they are is one of the most important factors in this decision.


OP here, bingo - and this is being marketed by both coaches, so trying to discern for my kid if either provides an advantage over the other - has met kids on both teams and all incredibly nice, not insufferable lol. NYU team does need to travel for practice

There's a big difference between NYC and Pittsburgh for four years. I went to Pitt and know Oakland well. I've also been to NYU's campus area.

I think the student bodies will vary in regional background as well.

New York is a deliberate choice in all ways.

I can't imagine anyone being neutral about the choice after visiting both. And I can see it going either way.

I personally would recommend being local in NYC for anything related to NYC Finance. It's just easier when you can network locally, can get to know future apartmentmates, etc.

For West Coast tech business jobs it probably doesn't matter.

Unless a couple of Jane Street folks went to CMU and played the sport…but Jane Street is a poor example…Citadel or Point72 are better because they aren’t 100% quant.

I think that’s only for games…but not sure where they practice.

NYU is an incredibly unique college experience. You either really want that or really don't.

I have found most Stern kids to be insufferable. Obviously they will be part of the larger NYU community which is huge and has lots of different types of kids so I'm sure they will find their spot. But Stern kids tend to be Gordon Gekko wanna be's who couldn't get into Wharton undergrad. Very superficial and cutthroat with a chip on their shoulder that they aren't at Wharton or even an Ivy.

Caveat - it is a big place, and there are plenty of kids there who are nice kids who are not like I described. But it skews heavily that way.
