Post 07/08/2025 16:49     Subject: Can't do HRT due to breast cancer risk

New poster. I’m 48 and still have periods. I have had LCIS BC. I’m not considering HRT… but wanted to say re the hair issue, I took oral minoxidil and it worked so well! But it made me gain 10 lbs, maybe water weight. It also made my liver enzymes elevated. I dropped the medicine and my hair fell out. I might try the topical minoxidil. I have to lose/maintain my weight because I have type 2 diabetes. (I’m 5’4, 138 lbs currently, but had been 150 taking minoxidil. Sadly my blood sugar is still in diabetic range, so my dr wants me to double my medicine.) middle age health issues are no fun!

I had crazy mood swings on tamoxifen. Rough year. Switched to monthly (and now quarterly) lupron shots to shut down my ovaries plus an AI (anaztrazole?) to block whatever other estrogen was in my system.

My sex drive is zero, and I still get night sweats. But my moods are much more even.

How is this weird misinformation? I had estrogen-positive BC and have spoken to my oncologist, gynecologist and breast specialist, all said no to HRT. They prescribe topical estrogen cream for vaginal dryness but nothing systemic. This is the current standard, perhaps if you are ER negative you could find a doctor who would prescribe it.

OP here. Not sure what you're talking about. People are correct that I could take HRT but my doctor did not recommend it. It's possible I could find another doctor who would have a different opinion, but I'm very scared of BC after seeing my mom suffer. Not sure I would do it regardless. But this fast-forward into aging really sucks, so I'm clearly a bit torn.

I can’t believe all the women who thing HRT stops the aging process lol.

Why are you always here, and why do you choose to be nasty? Is it productive? Can’t you even try to be less snide?

Not PP. But this "Why are you always here" nastiness is uncalled for and stupid (you have no way of knowing whether or not this pp posts a lot or not). Take your aggressiveness elsewhere.

No one said that HRT is not a risk, and I have no idea why you think you know what "all these women" (presumably those on this thread?) believe.

You can take Shatavari. It fixes the problems of menopause without hormones.

I don’t think PP was being nasty. I do agree with them that some women seem to think it’s a magic pill that puts off aging. It doesn’t. Your hair will still become dry and coarse. Your skin will be dry also. You will still have occasional aches and pains. Your eye sight will get worse. Your skin will sag. These are normal changes as humans age.

Same, OP, same.

I also have family history of breast cancer and while I probably could go on HRT, I’m just not comfortable with it. But yeah all of that you’re experiencing, I’m right there too. Throw in insane appetite that’s led me to gain 20 lbs over the seven years I’ve been in menopause.

If the risk to which you’re referring is that you have a family history, or even that you are a breast cancer survivor, you may still actually be a candidate for HRT.

I have a friend who actually had breast cancer, and she is on HRT. Took her a hot minute to find a doctor who did not knee-jerk refuse to give it to her, though.

Not all breast cancer is hormone positive. Also possible your friend found a bad doctor.
