She worked ahead so everything was turned in on the Friday prior to us being offline Monday-Saturday. Doing the work ahead and her teacher knowing what was going on meant no penalties. I appreciate the flexibility that VV gives over FCPS. The modules are only released one week in advance, so you can’t get that far ahead, but it was enough for our trip. This is the email which was sent to my child, me, her teacher, and her FCPS mentor:
“This student has not completed work and/or has not participated in synchronous instruction for this course for 2 consecutive days.
Please contact the student's instructor to discuss any extenuating circumstances. To avoid receiving future warning emails, please make sure to log in each day through www.virtualvirginia.org and participate in synchronous instruction or course work each weekday.
A Summer Session student who is consistently absent or falls behind in their coursework may be placed on a Pace Recovery Plan (PRP) at the discretion of the VVA instructor. Students who do not adhere to the PRP in its entirety will be administratively withdrawn from the Summer Session course. All PRP work must be submitted prior to the end of the term.
A student should spend consistent time in their VVA course(s), Monday through Friday, to complete all course assignments by their assigned due dates each week.
If you see inconsistent logins or little time spent in a course, this may mean that the student is falling behind in the course and/or has a time management issue. If this is the case, the first step should include a plan to help the student manage time better in courses.
If you notice that a student is consistently submitting work late or has missing assignments, talk with the student and the parent/family to help identify where support is needed.”
Thank you for posting this. Gives me some pause as reads discretion of teacher, but if I follow your student did all the work for the week before went on trip so only missed the online visual part of class, which I thought someone else but maybe it was you said the zoom part is optional to do live or to watch a recording. This is really helpful. Not sure why anyone would do FCPS since costs more and less flexible. Is it bc it includes drivers ed? Maybe that is cost difference.

She took HPE9 last summer, Econ and Personal Finance as an 8th class in the second semester, and now HPE10. She'll do online driver's ed (self-paced through private company) once PE is finished.
Virtual Virginia's HPE is much easier than FCPS (and cheaper!). The Econ/PF was very intensive, and sounds like it was more difficult than the summer self-paced one is through FCPS.
Is the econ/personal finance more interesting through Virtual Virginia? I thought the class would be more about personal finances through FCPS but it wasn't. Is Virtual Virginia more applicable to every day life?

In 8th grade we reached out in early June to the HS counselor who sent us to the HS Student Services Director. For Econ/PF and HPE10, I went straight to the SSD when enrollment opened with a cc to her counselor (for class selection purposes). The second time they did it within 2 days. The first time took a bit of back and forth (including setting up the SSD account, my parent account, and the student account), so maybe reach out in March or April. There is also a request form that needs to be submitted:https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is158.pdf. I chose lower cost and not accessible through FCPS (since we knew she would be missing two classes if she did the FCPS option).

I don't think many of the schools will sign you up for Virtual Virginia as a rising 9th grader before they know you and I doubt the 8th grade counselors have any involvement with this. You might have to wait until after Grade 9 or you can sign yourself up for ACE Online PE thru FCPS.
