Look up health food store and get some probiotics. This will really help.

This is my DH on every trip. He always gets “food poisoning” when we go to fancy restaurants abroad that serve dairy including butter or when he drinks red wine. When we travel to Asia he doesn’t have either of these things and somehow never gets “food poisoning”. He’s just in denial about lactose intolerance and alcohol intolerance. He’ll swear he’s eating the same meals as at home but doesn’t understand how much I modify cooking to remove dairy.

I hope you feel better soon, OP. If you can, I would just have Lactaid as part of meals out. My DD is lactose intolerant and does that when she suspects food might be cooked in butter or have cheese added without warning. It keeps the worst symptoms at bay.

Imodium today, and simple food tomorrow.

Did you have raw milk cheese? I can't eat those.

There's an American Hospital in Rome.

Just posting to say if it comes to it, I recently had a very positive experience in a Rome ER. The key apparently is to go to an ER associated with a private hospital. All ERs, including those associated with private hospitals, in Italy are free to all. Biggest problem was that English knowledge was a bit light but manageable.

They have imodium in Italy. Take 2 and get on with your day.
