DC very meh energy for most shows. True for at least the last 25 years. Little dancing, swaying, etc at 9:30 club, Anthem.

Obviously depends on the artist but I'm surprised at most shows. I'm like you paid to be here and you look like you don't want to be.

I'm 51 and most of the bands I've seen since I was 19 pretty much peaked in the '60s and '70s. Totally seated shows and still pretty high energy, considering.

Went to see CAAMP at the anthem last night and was in GA standing behind the assigned seats in the boxes on the third level. I was shocked at how few folks stood when the band played — the lead singer even called out how unengaged the balcony seemed. So many people just sitting there on their phones.

I went to a concert at Wolf Trap a few years back and same story — no one stood. And when I did stand I got pressure to sit back down. The band actually commented on how subdued the audience seemed in their online road blog.

Is this a DC thing?

I’m not young — over 40 — but what’s the point of going to a rock concert if you’re just going to sit?

I'll counter this with -- what's the point of buying seats if you want to stand?

+1 people who buy seats and then stand and block those seated behind them are the absolute worst. You make everyone else behind you stand up and it causes a chain reacitons. Sit the eff down.

+1 and if the artist pressures people to stand up to feel good about themselves (see previous posts) then they really suck. They should be confident enough to put on an energetic show even if the audience is sitting (maybe not on their phones though- I'll give em that)

Yes it is a DC thing. Go to a concert in L.A., NYC, Baltimore or Philly and it's a totally better vibe. DC is low energy.

Depends on the show but mostly I sit. It doesn’t mean I’m not engaged, it’s just my preference.

Barry Manilow put on a great show, and us being there (late-40s), lowered the average age substantially. I realized mid-way through everyone was sitting, and I was loving it. Until the end, for Cocacabana, when everyone stood

Depends on the venue. You were in one of the very few seated sections of a standing venue. Of course it would be rude to stand.

That's their problem then.

At some venues — like Wolf Trap— if you want to be up front you have to buy seats.

The whole point of wolf trap is to sit down in seats or on the lawn!

I HATE it when people are on their phones. It ruins it for me. It's fine if they're recording the concert, but just scrolling Facebook (which you can easily see if you're in the balcony and looking down at the floor seats) drives me crazy.

I usually stand up at concerts only if the people in front of me are.

I hate it when people stand. I’m short and cannot see what’s happening on stage. SIT!

Bro, I'm disabled. I can't stand for a show, even if I want to. If you want to stand, get pit tix or GA. I will screamclap after songs, cry, mouth the words (but not sing b/c that's rude af) and I'm not on my damned phone. Let me enjoy the show in some semblance of comfort. I paid out the ass for that seat!

This is an age, band and venue thing. No one sits at Cap One when there’s a young boy band, but they will for a slow song by a solo vocalist. Anthem is very low-key in the balcony. Wolf Trap is hit or miss and people get really annoyed with standers.
