...that is pretty standard for a professional job that would allow WFH??

100k is entry level for most white collar professions

I don’t know why we never pursued Roth IRA’s and now I am looking into the possibility of conversion.

Appreciate everyone!

Be careful so you don’t get hit by huge tax bills

Not really a tax issue but if you retire and use Medicare, you very possibly will be subject to Medicare premium surcharge "IRMAA" Which in my case has taken my Medicare premium from $181.00 per month to $434 a month, premium is multiplied by 2.4 times. Medicare looks back 2 years for income.

More info— I am 66 plus 8 months, spouse will turn 73. DH waited until past 67 to retire and regrets it— his energy level is not the same as would have been if retired earlier.

I like the ideas about tax shelters and savings— definitely something to think about.

My job is ok—interesting yet also can be extremely tedious. It’s not a bad job.

I like the structure it gives me. I would try to build structure into retirement— I have projects to complete, hobbies I’d like to enjoy, volunteer work etc.

considering i’m retiring at 59 if i were in your shoes i’d be retired already! However i have a zillion things I love doing, and work is constantly getting in the way!

When you work, your trade your time for the money. You can earn your money, but you can not earn your time. You do not want to be the richest person in the cemetery.

The key question is thinking about why you work. You don’t “need” to economically, but may choose to for other reasons.

I like the freedom of retirement . The number of years you can travel and “play” with your husband are limited (to some unknown #). Don’t think you will have forever together.

The average life expectancy of men is only 75.8!

This right here. Everyone with parents who died early have learned this lesson.

Why isn't the money in Roth? Did you not know how RMD will affect you? Or the right order to start emptying the accounts?

Yes, you should quit your job. You mentioned that your husband regrets not retiring earlier, so you both need to start doing whatever interests you outside of work before it's too late for either of you to enjoy those things.

Anonymous wrote:My husband is some years older than me and has to start taking RMD’s this year which will increase our gross income by roughly $6000/ month.

I have a standard WFH job and earn ~ 100,000/ year. Benefits are covered through spouses former employer(fed) We were never high earners per DCUM standards but are content with our lifestyle.

I have already had $31,000 taken out this year for my 401k.

Our taxes are going to go up significantly due to the RMD’s and we are paying quarterly taxes.

It makes sense to quit, just wondering if I am missing something in the big picture?

Thanks for any advice or feedback!

I don't think you told us the whole story. As a Fed retiree, he should collect his pension (I assume he is CSRS pension). With this he income is more than just RMD from TSP/401K.
