Most volleyball activities fill up pretty quickly. Too many parents with a lot of money in this area. You can sign up for the waitlists and you may be lucky: some clubs add another session or another team if they see demand and they can wiggle more players in. They won't say no to more money.

I understand that part but how quickly is pretty quickly? Minutes, Seconds, Hours.

Based on our experience, not doing the fall training with MOCO reduces your chances of making a team. Participation in the fall training might show some sort of commitment to the club. But that's not all: they get to know the players during the fall training program and they give the participants additional rope. We know one player who was offered a spot on a MOCO team, even though she could not show up at the tryouts (because of an injury). The offer was based entirely on her participation at the fall training.

That's just not fair.

In the pre-tryout clinics, MoCo will tell you that if you signed up for multiple clinics, they may turn you down so that others who have not yet attended but signed up can attend.

In our experience, if you sign up you will get into at least 1 club prep session with MOCO. They are pretty open about how they run the sessions. You put in a request with all of the sessions you can attend and then they send you an email a few days before either confirming you or not. I don’t think they run any “secret” invite-only clinics that other clubs run, or at least none that we heard of last year.

So even though it fills up like all the clinics in the area, you’ll have a chance to be seen and to see their coaches.

There's gonna be another moco clinic later in the fall. Make sure you sign up for that.

You will hear this from many clubs: you earn time on top teams, and you have some guaranteed court time on lower teams, which are more development-based. This is where the balancing act comes in: the coaching on the top teams are definitely better than on the bottom teams. So: do you want guaranteed court time and weaker coaching, or you want better coaching with earned court time? Another factor cutting into court time is the roster size. Moco keeps their roster at 12 players, which is decent to give everyone some court time. It is not as good as MVSA (with 10 players / team), but better than in other clubs who bloat their rosters, reducing the court time for most players.

Does MOCO have a minimum playtime guarantee or an "earned" playtime based on training attitude or a "best aways play" culture for smaller age teams (11 - 14)?

No we are on the waitlist.

If you are lucky, they might add one or two more teams to accommodate the players on the waitlist. Life happens for some players and they have to drop out because of some schedule conflict: the club will replace them with players on the waitlist. It would be a miracle for your player to make a MOCO team at the U15 level if she is a beginner who doesn't do the fall training.

To turn this even more realistic, I would remove a few words from the sentence: It would be a miracle for your player to make a MOCO team at the U15 level if she is a beginner.

MOCO’s fall training is only for U10-U14. Most U15s are tied up with their JV/Varsity high school teams. And yes, it gets pretty competitive around U14/U15 - Almost all of MOCO’s U15 girls end up making their high school teams. If your DD is thinking about trying out for MOCO, definitely sign up early for the Club Prep sessions since that’s where coaches focus on players who are interested (and skilled).

Anonymous wrote:Are tryouts usually competitive? I have a daughter in U14.

You need to offer more details about your daughter to receive useful advice. How much volleyball experience does she have? Are we talking about rec experience or club?
U14 is very competitive in all clubs. Moco has a lot of returners who want to make it back to their teams or climb one level within the club. If your daughter is comparable to a returner in all aspects, the returner will likely get the spot. Some teams lose a few players to better clubs, so that's a chance for players from other clubs to make a team. But these outsiders will compete with club players who want to trickle up from the bottom teams. If players trickle up, a few spots become available in the bottom teams. Those few spots will likely be taken by players from weaker clubs who want an upgrade. It is very unlikely to make a Moco team with no club experience, especially at the U14 level. To increase your chances to make a Moco team, go to their fall tryouts - that's where you will see some (but not all) of your competition.
