You can always ask your specific school what the reasoning is, but at Carson kids were never allowed to bring backpacks to the classroom all year - they had to be stored in lockers. They did explain that with 30+ kids in some rooms, it was a tripping hazard. It may have something to do with cell phones. You guys need to relax - it’s the last day. Of your kid absolutely needs their backpack, they can be stored in the office. Locker combos are already reset for next year I bet and they don’t want to chance loss leaving stuff behind in lockers on the last day.

Kilmer kid took his backpack today but I did notice other kids with no backpacks

Kilmer didn’t send out any emails about this. I just double checked. I have one of the kids bringing one, because of social plans later.

I heard from another parent that one year, kids filled backpacks with paper assignments and such, then dumped them all over the hallways when the last bell rang, leaving a giant mess. Might be urban legend.

My oldest child's LA teacher in seventh grade tripped over a student's backpack and broke all three bones in her arm.

My middle son's best friend tripped over a backpack in his Algebra class and broke his ankle.

My neighbor, who is a teacher, tripped over a student's backpack and slammed her 8-month pregnant belly into the edge of a desk. Thankfully, both she and the baby were okay, but it was scary and painful for her.

My middle son said kids stumble over backpacks all the time, but they are usually just stumbles, so no one gets hurt.

We did not here this.

Also, plenty of schools don't have lockers for kids (maybe not in FCPS) and they walk around all day with their heavy school backpacks. My kids had to do this in some of their schools. Not being able to access a locker shouldn't be an excuse for confiscating a bag.

What on earth are they carrying that is so heavy?

They have no computers, binders, books, or materials anymore. They might have a yearbook, pen, and water bottle. They can't carry that?

No backpack, large purse ( how large?), or string bag allowed in Carson MS tomorrow.
