Thanks for all the suggestions! We’ve ended up booking a Hampton Inn (we have points) but definitely keeping Quirk on the list if we do a more thorough visit sometime. Appreciate all the suggestions on places to eat or check out while we’re there, as well as the reassurances on the traffic situation. Very helpful!

Actually that’s exactly what is happening there. Now with the addition of a ton of military folks milling around with nothing to do.

Richmonder here—the Jefferson and Quirk are nicer hotels, but you could literally stay anywhere in the West End and be fine. Libbie Grove has some great restaurants if you want to avoid Carytown (though I do like Fire and Hops), and it’s pretty close to U of R. We like Stella’s, Conejo, and Beijing on Grove. If you want to venture out of the city for a good meal, go to Hobnob or Portico. While you’re here, check out the VMFA or Maymont.

The reqs for hotels made me laugh. Let’s pick the most expensive classic hotels for a kid visiting colleges. Just find a hotel you have reward points at and stay there. Richmond is not big and traffic is not like the dmv. Honestly the u of r campus is an island. Very little in terms of walking to from campus. I would do that in the morning and lunch somewhere in Carytown, there is a parking garage near Publix’s. Then I would do Vcu in the afternoon. Park your car in one of the paid vcu lots. I would walk the neighborhood and see how your kid feels. You get an urban vibe right around campus on Broad St, but walk to the fan and you get fancy million dollar townhouses. I would eat dinner near vcu campus there is about every type of food you could want.

No there isn’t, but you knew that already when you posted this. The No King movement is having events all over the country on Saturday, including in OT at Market Square. There won’t be riots in Richmond at the Bell Tower. GMAFB

My daughter goes to U of R and we/she finds the city super easy to navigate. You can definitely do both schools in one day. The food at UR is very good so you could eat at the dining hall which might provide more insights.

+1 Quirk has been our go-to hotel for Richmond visits. Good restaurant options nearby. As others have mentioned Carytown is another good stop for food.

I've made day trips for many years and enjoyed it. Then I was there for several days for s conference, and really enjoyed it.

Richmond is...kind of a dump. Good luck.

You will have no difficulty getting from on campus to the other, even if traveling at rush hour. My parents live in Richmond. I am also shocked at how easy it is to drive and park downtown. You'll go through Carytown to get from UofR to VCU so can stop for lunch there.
