He will get an unexcused absence from whatever classes he was supposed to be in.

If this were an elementary, I'd expect the school to try to get them. If it were an alternative learning center where maybe there are some students who flee and there are safety/behavioral health concerns, I'd expect the school to try to get them.

At a high school, I dont expect anyone to follow, however they might get spotted by office staff, security, or person looking at the cameras and they may follow up on another day with consequences. I have a walkie in my position at another school and hear radio chatter all day long.. "so and so is crossing the street to wendys, etc". Very common

Same, and I was at a top rated high school. A lot of us had it timed down to the second which restaurants we could run to at lunch and make it back in time. And then when we were old enough to drive, where we could drive to and get back in time.

He is running so he can get there with enough time to eat and get back.

My Chicago suburban high school had “ “open” campus. If you didn’t have a class, you could go anywhere. I liked it as I learned to treat school like a job and it helped me own my work and my schedule.

Less than 3 days of school left, kids are ecstatic. Surprised you haven't seen more running from the school. Lots of variability in terms of kids only needing to be there for certain portions of the day this last week.

At Wendy’s because McDonals is banning teen customers.

High schools are not prisons and teenagers will not be physically blocked, tackled, or captured if they leave the building. If they violated school policy, they will be handed typical high school consequences such as detention or suspension.

At 18 we could write our own notes, "please excuse Mary from her 4th period class ..."

I've seen principals chase after elementary school students who escape. I don't know that it's worth pursuing at the end of the school year for high school but with the crazy drivers, they are safer at school.
