Scary news, will be slashing 7,000 non-manufacturing jobs in next 2 years
For an industry that is supposed to be ``safer'' than tech, media etc in terms of layoffs, how is the next gen of workers going to know what do do?

I’m sure it’s nice to have my kids living with me, but what about when they are married or dating, do I really want to hear my three daughters and their husband’s in the middle of the night? Not to mention having three families of grandchildren who has a house that big?
DP. It would be out of necessity. Those with the financial wherewithal,like a previous poster, will help their children afford a separate place.

They have been warning for years that there will be a shrinking labor force as the boomers retire, there’s a demographic cliff coming for colleges since GenZ and Alpha are smaller than the previous generations and many colleges will close and we will have fewer college graduates.
I am hopeful that this shrinking of our population will help us shoehorn into the new AI, low labor, force participation world, and have jobs for those who want

If you're right, it will be brutal for real estate in high cost of living areas. If people are jobless and finances get tight, people will need to reevaluate if it makes sense to have an expensive house in an expensive area. Even people who own without a mortgage will be able to save money by moving.[/quote]
Some people will definitely be forced to sell but, like Covid, large homes and ADUs provide the opportunity for multi-generational living and sharing living spaces and expenses with people outside your nuclear family. My next door neighbor recently did a gut renovation that included separate living spaces and an elevator. His single daughter just moved back after college. Another neighbor took out his front lawn and installed an attractive motor court that accommodates two more cars without blocking the main garage.

Same. Multigenerational living is going to become the norm.
I can’t stomach multigenerational living so I’m actively looking for a second property to buy with cash. I agree that this will likely get much worse.
The LA Times has been running interesting articles on homeowners building nice ADUs to accommodate different living needs such as adult children, seniors, and renters for extra income. We have the space and might add an ADU if our adult children move back to this expensive area.

+1. We've decided not to downsize or move to a different city in retirement. This spring we put in a new hvac system, which we had been putting off in case of a move.
oh lordy.. I do not want to retire here. Plus, my kids will probably find jobs in other states.
